Marijuana Decriminalization in Massachusetts

·

Voters are leaning towards decriminalizing marijuana in Massachusetts with Question 2 on the ballot for the November 4th election.

Fifty-one percent support the measure, which would decriminalize marijuana use, while 32 percent oppose it, and 16 percent are undecided. The proposal would replace the criminal penalties for possessing up to one ounce of marijuana with a civil fine of $100.

The Massachusetts police have been mobilizing support against Question 2, closing the gap from an August poll which showed 72 percent of likely voters supporting decriminalization. The question remains if the boys in blue can get enough support in the next 12 days to overcome the current 19 point deficit.

There have been other states that have tried to decriminalize marijuana use and possession. Nevada once had a similar measure on the ballot. Polls showed it passing by a large margin, but failed on election day. Hopefully Massachusetts will be able to pull it off. I don't think someone with huge potential should have their life ruined by smoking an herb that has been proven to be safer and more healthy than alcohol use.
