California Gay Marriage Rights in Peril

·

California has always been a "maverickey" state. Us Californians, we like to lead the way. We are right on the front lines in the fight against global warming and were one of the first states to allow gay marriages. In June, same sex marriages were legalized in California. Soon after, a proposition was put up to ban gay marriage.

Last month polls showed the gay marriage ban measure losing 55% to 38% among likely voters. Meaning gay couples would have the same marriage rights as heterosexual couples. But as of October 17th the measure is favored 48% to 45% among likely voters questioned by Survey USA of Verona, N.J. The poll has a margin of error of four percentage points making the results a statistical tie.

The issue of gay marriage has come up many times on both sides of the campaign trail. Recently Republican vice-presidential nominee Gov. Sarah Palin said she would support a constitutional ban on same sex marriages. On the other side of the spectrum, Democratic vice-presidential nominee Senator Joe Biden said on the Ellen DeGeneres Show that he would oppose a California gay marriage ban.

Although it is a touchy subject, any measure that would take away rights from Americans should not be supported. The constitution was created to represent freedom not repression. Please remember to vote NO on Proposition 8 on November 4th - keep America free.
